Teacher discussed Brain Warmer with class:

“There are  many associations with what is “Gothic”. Many of you think of it as the stereotype/social construct of being “gothic” as in wearing all black, showing depressed or sad emotions, focusing on the dark and depressed. Others spoke of gothic architecture that has big archways, uses stone or dark building material, has ornate and dark details such as gargoyles, stained glass windows, intricate designs (see picture below). Also, there is gothic writing. This type of writing focuses on the dark, depressing, suspenseful, mysterious, insane, and evil. We will be exploring only gothic fiction, meaning that it has the focuses just discussed in stories that are untrue.”

This is an example of how you can write out your speech.

I took my outline and reorganized a little, added in transition words and small amounts of extra elaboration.

You can see that I labeled my transition words, evidence pieces, where my evidence is explained, etc. so that I know I didn’t miss anything from transitioning from my outline to writing out the speech. You won’t say those labels out loud, they just help with organizing but also for Ms. A to GRADE YOU.

•For complete persuasion, one’s argument should have all three appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos
          oPathos: an emotional appeal

-convinces a person by appealing to their higher emotions (belief in fairness, love, pity, positive humor, patriotism) or their lower emotions (greed, lust, revenge, guilt, etc.)

– When you accept a claim based on how it makes you feel without fully analyzing the rationale behind the claim, you are acting on pathos.

– Although the pathetic appeal can be manipulative, it is the cornerstone of moving people to action.

Parental Leave Argument by Janet Walsch

Kimberly N. had a senior position at a charitable organization when her son was born. She planned for a six-week maternity leave, but her son was born with a life-threatening condition, and she ended up taking 12 weeks with partial pay. Kimberly’s supervisor was unhappy that she took such a long leave and refused to let her work part-time or from home. After going back to work, Kimberly had a terrible performance evaluation that contrasted sharply with her previous positive evaluations. She soon left her job, which significantly impacted family finances. Savings quickly dwindled, debts grew, and Kimberly filed for bankruptcy. A few months later, she found a part-time job at a lower level with no benefits but was laid off when the recession hit. She worries that future employers will question her period of unemployment.
